John Harland (1806-1868), F.S.A., was chief reporter of the Manchester Guardian, 1830-1860, and a junior partner with J.E. Taylor, its owner, from, 1839. He was also a keen antiquarian and in thirteen years edited fourteen volumes for the Chetham Society. At his death he was engaged on a new edition of Baines's History of the County and Duchy of Lancaster.(see also Ll/59/l9/3-6 below)
