Sau Lan was born into a family of 6 children, five girls and one boy. Ancestral home is Tai Po Ta Kwu Ling where her grandfather had built the family home. Her father was an opium addict and although her mother was unable to leave the family and work abroad she did manage to finance her daughter’s education. Sau Lan began school aged 11 and completed her schooling 19. Aged 20 she married her first husband and had two sons. Her husband died not long after she had their second child so she returned to live with her mother. Seven years later she moved to the UK to work for her brother-in-law as a waitress. Her second husband also came from Tai Po and was working in the restaurant in the UK. After her second marriage her sons came and joined them in the UK.
