Custodial history:
The first chapel of the chapelry of Whitworth in the townships of Spotland and Wardle, in the parish of Rochdale was built in 1732. In 1775 it was rebuilt, and reconsecrated on 28 July 1794. By 1846 a new church was needed, the foundation stone of which was laid in April 1847. This church was reconsecrated on 3 Jan. 1850.
