St. Peter's was consecrated on 1 April 1850, but was not assigned a District until 1861, by Order in Council, 5 August (London Gazette, 6 August 1861), when those parts of the townships of Longworth and Sharples not already granted to the chapelries of Walmsley and Astley Bridge, and that part of the township of Little Bolton called Horrock's Moor, were assigned to it.
