Custodial history:
St. Mary's was built on land donated by Henry Hoyle of New Hall Hey, merchant, who was also the largest contributor to its cost, and its first patron. The foundation stone was laid on 7 March 1836 and it was opened by licence on 15 March 1838. It was consecrated on 20 September 1838.A District was assigned by Bishop's Instrument on 8 January 1841 from the chapelry of Haslingden, the parish of Bury and the chapelry of Newchurch inRossendale (see L97/1/12/2), which was amended by Bishop's Instrument, 27 December 1872 (L97/1/12/3)Some of the parish was lost to St. John's, Cloughfold, by Order in Council, 25 March 1887 (London Gazette, 29 March 1887), and to St. Paul's, Constable Lee, by Order in Council, 21 January 1914 (London Gazette,. 23 January 1914).
