Custodial history:
Services were held in Broomhouse Lane School from 1858 for the proposed District of St. James. The foundation stone of the church was laid on 18 August 1860 by Mrs. Sarah Esther Ffarrington of Worden Hall, Leyland, who had donated the site. The church was built largely at the expense of Arthur Heywood, Herbert Birley and James Dugdale, and consecrated on 14 December 1861.
A District was assigned from the parish of Eccles by Order in Council, 19 May 1866 (London Gazette, 25 May). Part of the parish was transferred to the new Holy Angels, Claremont, by Order in Council, 16 December 1925 (London Gazette, 18 December). The boundaries with Holy Angels were altered by Order in Council, 27 October 1971 (London Gazette, 28 October).
