The school was licensed for worship in 1876 and services held there from 3 December 1876 until the church was built and consecrated on 10 March 1892. A District was assigned to St Mary from Holcombe, Tottingham and Turton, by Order in Council 9 May 1892 (London Gazette, 13 May).
