Christ Church was built on land given by Rev. George Heron, perpetual curate of Carrington, Cheshire. The foundation stone was laid on 11 September 1858, and the the church consecrated on 24 December 1859.
It was assigned a District from St. John's, Pendlebury, and St. Mary's, Eccles, by Order in Council, 11 October 1861, (London Gazette, 15 October). More of St. John's, Pendlebury, was added by Order in Council, 14 May 1868, (London Gazette, 15 May).
By Order in Council 20 October 1874, (London Gazette, 20 November) part of the parish was assigned to St. Augustine's, Pendlebury.
