Custodial history:
From deed dated 1798 The Lees family of Saddleworth appear to have originated in Ashton-Under-Lyne. They appear to have remained in this locality for over 100 years when they then moved to Saddleworth in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The main series papers are the personal effects of William Lees, solicitor who qualified in 1869 and became a partner in Weston, Groves and Lees of Market Street. On the death of William Lees in 1925, the company was taken over by Messrs Grover, Smith and Moss of 77 Fountain Street who continued to administer the estate under the new title of Grover Smith and Moss. Later papers relate to William Lees' son James.
