Shaw chapel was an ancient chapelry of the parish of Prestwich cum Oldham, dating back at least to 1515. It was rebuilt in 1732 and enlarged in 1798, and a new church was consecrated on 5 June 1871. A District, comprising the township of Crompton, was assigned to it, from the parish of Prestwich cum Gidham, by Order in Council, 4 March 1835 (London Gazette, 5 May 1835).
