Custodial history:
St John's began as a Sunday School in Mount Street built in 1841. The Mission District of St John worshipped at Rock Street Sunday School from 1868. An Iron Church was erected and opened in 1881 with curate in charge appointed 24 Jan 1882. The congregation raised the funds to build a permanent church over the next decade, which was consecrated on the same site as the iron church on 25 Jan 1905. Its parish was created from Birch St Mary and Heywood St Luke in May 1905.
