The following papers of Wilfred John Pegge relate mainly to his life during the First World War. He joined the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps in February 1916, and was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Territorial Force, 6th (Rifle) Battalion, the King's (Liverpool Regiment) in March 1917, and raised to Lieutenant in September 1918. He served in France and Flanders As Officer Commanding No. 1 Platoon and was gassed in July 1917 in France. He was awarded the Military Cross on 2 December 1918. In civilian life he was a member of the firm of Wilding, Earley and Pegge of Manchester, solicitors, and acted as legal adviser to the diocese of Salford. He was President of the Salford Diocesan Catholic Truth Society Council, 1931-32 and 1950Ä52, and was made a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Gregory in 1953. He was elected Conservative councillor for St. Ann's Ward in 1937, which he represented till 1949, when he began to represent Barlow Moor Ward. In 1960 he was made an alderman and in 1966 was the Conservative choice for mayor. Unfortunately he had to stand down because of ill health.
