Absalom Watkin (1787-1861) was born in London and moved to Manchester c. 1800. He prospered in business and became a prominent figure in local affairs. He was appointed to the Reform Committee by the inhabitants of Manchester at a meeting called by the boroughreeve, 22 Sept. 1831, (see minute book, 1821-58, in Boroughreeve's records Ref. M91/Ml/33) and later became a member of the anti-Corn Law League. Sir Edward Watkin (1819-1901) 1st baronet, was the eldest son of Absalom. He was Liberal M.P. for Stockport, 1864-8 and for Hythe 1874-5.

Papers numbered concerning Manchester Reform Committee and John Bright were purchased at Sotheby, 3 Dec. 1974. Those concerning Cobden were offered for sale at the same time but were not acquired by the Library until April 1976.
