The two parishes were united by Order in Council, 24 May 1967 (London Gazette, 26 May 1967). St Oswald's Church was consecrated on 7 April 1855 and a District assigned to it from St Michael's, Manchester, by Order in Council, 24 June (London Gazette, 1 July 1856). St Catherine's Church was consecrated on 5 November 1859, having been built by the congregation of St Paul's, Kersal, for Rev. Abraham Haworth. It was assigned a District from St Thomas's, Red Bank, St Michael's, Manchester, and St Oswald's, by Order in Council, 10 May 1860 (London Gazette, 16 May 1860).
