John Harrop was born in Ancoats Workhouse in 1847. He worked in the cotton mills around Stockport and attended mutual improvement classes. He was invited to become an agent to sell books whilst working at the Hanover Mills, Reddish. From there he went on to become a bookseller and furniture retailer. He became a Liberal councillor in 1897 for St. Clement's Ward and Lord Mayor in 1906-1907. He married Elizabeth Farrer. Maude Elizabeth Lilly (nee Harrop) was the only daughter of John and Elzabeth Harrop. They also had 12 sons.
