Custodial history:
Prior to World War One the Railway Builders was the only union for craftsmen working in the mines. In 1920 they broke away to form the Lancashire and Cheshire Colliery Tradesmen and Kindred Workers Association with the main offices at Wigan and with W. A. Hipwood as secretary. This association continued up to 1945 when it became a constituent association of the National Union of Mineworkers (which itself was formed from the Mines Federation of Great Britain) to become the National Union of Mineworkers Lancashire Trademen's Area. Due to the closure of a high number of mines in the area, the tradesmen finally merged with the National Union of Mineworkers North Western Area in July 1968 and the Craft section ceased to exist
