Custodial history:
The company was established in 1891, as the Manchester Ship Canal Pontoons and Dry Docks Co. Ltd., to provide dock and ship repairing facilities for the Manchester Ship Canal. Its founder was George Renwick, a Newcastle shipowner, acting with other businessmen from North East England, who had engineering and shipping interests. In 1906 it changed its name to Manchester Dry Docks Co. Ltd. The company was based at the Manchester end of the canal, at a site adjacent to the Mode Wheel Locks, near present day Trafford Park. A pontoon dock at Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, was opened in 1893, to be followed, in 1894, by a dry dock and a pontoon dock at Manchester. Two further dry docks were opened in Manchester, in 1907 and 1917. The company changed its name to Manchester Marine Ltd. in March 1972. The company was acquired by Furness Withy in 1974.
