Joseph Parry (1744-1826) , born in Liverpool, moved to Manchester in 1790, where he established himself as a portrait painter and artist of repute. His son David Henry (1793-1826) was also a portrait painter who moved to London in May 1826, but died there the same September. Another son, James (1805-1871), stayed in Manchester and was also an artist. David Henry's youngest son, Charles James (1824-1894) worked as a commission agent for the woollen industry, but was also an amateur landscape artist. He had two sons Charles James, a landscape and sea-scape painter, and David Henry, a painter of military subjects and writer. (see 'Dictionary of National Biography)

These papers were purchased in 1957 from Miss Gwen Parry of Overstrand, Norfolk, except for GB127.M367/2/3; GB127.M367/5/1/5, 10, 16, 18-22; GB127.M367/5/4/3-5, 7, 8; GB127.M367/5/5/1, 3-5; GB127.M367/5/6/1-3; GB127.M367/5/7/1-8; GB127.M367/6/1/1, 2; GB127.M367/6/2/1-3; GB127.M367/6/3; GB127.M367/6/5/1-6; GB127.M367/9/1/4, which were purchased in March 1980 from R W and C R Lamb, antiquarian booksellers of Lowestoft.
