Custodial history:
In March 1982 the National Health Service was reorganised and the Manchester Area Health Authority was succeeded by the North West Regional Health Authority. The Manchester Area Health Authority (Teaching) came into being on the 1 April 1974 as a result of the reorganisation of the National Health Service. The Committee had been appointed in the summer of 1973 and the Authority took over the responsibility to provide health care to the citizens of Manchester and for specialised services to around one million people living in the North West. Previously 6 different bodies had fulfilled this responsibility between them, namely: the United Manchester Hospitals, the University of South Manchester Hospital Management Committee, the North East Manchester Hospital Management Committee, the Booth Hall and Monsall Hospital Management Committee, Wythenshawe and North Cheshire Hospital Management Committee and the Community Health Services provided by Manchester City Council. Under the new authority the area was divided into three districts, North, South and Central and the day to day running of the services was the responsibility of 3 district management teams. On 31 March 1982 under another reorganisation the Manchester Area Health Authority (Teaching) disappeared. In its place 3 new authorities appeared to serve the North, South and Central District of the City
