The foundation stone was laid on 11 February 1848 and the church consecrated on 28 April 1849. A District was assigned from the parish of Manchester by Bishop's Instrument, 17 May 1849, and confirmed by Order in Council, 8 June 1854 (London Gazette, 16 July 1854) covering parts of Moss Side, Stretford and Withington.
Part of this District was transferred to Christ Church, Moss Side, by Order in Council, 31 July 1858 (London Gazette, 13 Aug 1858), part to St Bride's, Old Trafford, by Order in Council, 17 May 1879, (London Gazette, 23 May 1879), and part to St Edmund's, Whalley Range, by Order in Council, 12 Dec 1883 London Gazette 18 December).
