In 1917 various Protestant churches in Manchester and Salford formed the Manchester and Salford Council of Christian Congregations, later Manchester, Salford and District Council of Christian Congregations. In 1943 the Council dissolved and re-formed as the Manchester, Salford and District Council of Churches, and became affiliated to the British Council of Churches. In 1965 it changed its name to the Manchester and District Council of Churches. In September 1973 it changed again to the Greater Manchester County Ecumenical Council. Though not excluded by the Constitution, Roman Catholic churches did not join the Council until after July 1968 when the Executive Council formally approved that they be invited to join. In c.1986 they became Greater Manchester Churches Together.
