Custodial history:
Samuel Green (died 1855) established a dyeworks for fustians and strong goods at Garratt near Brook Street in 1806. The business continued until 1837, then lay unoccupied for some time until Mr Prince used some of the premises. In 1841 the business premises were used by Ainsworth Sykes & Co. See Graham's History of Calico Printing (BRff 667.3G1). The estate was later rented out for commercial and domestic use by the Trustees of Samuel Green. See Ordnance Survey map published 1850 for a plan of the Old Garratt and New Garratt Works, and see M535/BOX 3 for a map of New Garratt estate showing major tenants in 1891. The land was bought in the 1950s, following the collapse of the river wall, by the College of Technology (which later became part of Manchester Metropolitan University).
