St James's church was consecrated on 3 May, 1888. It was assigned a District from the parish of St.Edmund, Whalley Range, by Order in Council, 6 April, 1886, (London Gazette, 12 April 1889).
The boundaries with Christ Church, Moss Side were altered by Order in Council, 6 March 1902 (London Gazette, 7 March 1902).
In 1973 the parish of St. Clement's, Greenheys, was united with St. James's as St. James with St.Clement, Moss Side, St. James's becoming the parish church of the united benefice (Order in Council, 19 January, London Gazette, 23 January 1973).
