St. Ambrose began as a Mission in Higher Chatham St. in the parish of All Saints, Choriton upon Medlock. The church was consecrated on 22 November 1884 and a District assigned to it from All Saints by Order in council 19 May 1885. (London Gazette 22 May 1885). In 1902 part of the parish of Christ Church, Moss Side, was added to it by Order in Council, 6 March (London Gazette, 7 March 1902). The boundaries with St. Philip's, Hulme were altered by Order in Council, 11 August 1966, (London Gazette, 16 August 1966), and part of St. Saviour's Chorlton upon Medlock was added to the parish by Order in Council, 28 July 1967, London Gazette, 3 August 1967) Services were held in the Church Hall, Oliver St. from 5 Mar. 1967. The church was closed and demolished in 1974 and services were held in St. Peter's House, The Precinct Centre, Manchester. In 1979 by Order in Council 30 March (London Gazette, 5 April 1979) the name of the parish was changed from St Ambrose, Chorlton upon Medlock, to Whitworth, Manchester. From 1952, St. Ambrose's was the University church, St. Peter's House becoming the University chaplaincy in 1974.
