The Manchester Society of Bookcollectors first began to meet as a society in 1955. The Libraries Committee granted the society the privilege to hold its monthly meetings in the Central Library where they continued to be held. After January 1975, with the deaths of Mr. D. I. Colley, the Honorary Secretary and Mr. A. Hyde, no meetings were called.

5 items were deposited by Mr. E. L. Burney, a member of the Society of Bookcollectors from 1959, in September 1988. The remaining item was transferred in July 1988 from the former Director of Libraries Office.
