St. Margaret's was consecrated on 15 March 1875.
District was assigned from St. Paul's, Withington, by Order in Council, 26 October 1875 (London Gazette, 29 October 1875).
Part of the parish was transferred to St. Chad's, Ladybarn, by Order in Council, 7 August 1900 (London Gazette, 14 August 1900), while part of Holy Innocents, Fallowfield was added to St. Margaret's in 1905, by Order in Council, 10 May (London Gazette, 12 May 1905).
In 1927 part was added to St. Paul's, Withington and part to Emmanuel, Barlow Moor, while parts of St. John's, Heaton Mersey and St. Paul's, Heaton Moor, were transferred to St. Margaret's, by Order in Council 20 December (London Gazette, 23 December 1927).
Parts of the parishes of St. James, Birch and St. Agnes, Birch, were added to St. Margaret's in 1929, by Order in Council, 5 November (London Gazette, 8 November 1929).
