IIM Centenary 1873-1973 Pamphlet
The IIM Special Collection correspondence file (M740/8/24/2/9) confirms that the Institute's library was deposited in the Central Library in the early 1960s and was later dispersed into the Social Sciences reference stock. The file includes a couple of book lists of this material (see G016.368 M1 above).

The Insurance Institute of Manchester (IIM) is the oldest insurance institute in the country. From 1873 to 1897 the 'Insurance Institute', as it was originally known, was an independent body. From 1897 to 1912, it was affiliated with the Federation of Insurance Institutes of Great Britain and Ireland; James Ostler was involved in the formation of the Federation. In 1912 came the incorporation of the Manchester Insurance Association (MIA) under the provisions of the Royal Charter. F. W. Pascoe Rutter, of Manchester, was heavily involved in arranging the Charter as President of the Federation of Insurance Institutes of Great Britain and Ireland in 1911. The result was the national Chartered Insurance Institute (CII).The IIM meeting on 15 Nov 1912 (see BOX 7) was the first council meeting (from which numbering starts) following the merger of the Insurance Institute and the Insurance Association. The constitution did not change until 1948, when all local institutes became part of the central body of the CII. The IIM celebrated its jubilee in 1923, when a jubilee prize fund was inaugurated to grant prizes to successful candidates in each section of the CII examinations. In 1933 the IIM celebrated its silver jubilee. And in 1973 the IIM celebrated its centenary. On all three ocassions the institute hosted the CII's annual annual conference.The original object of the institute was 'the promotion of a good understanding among the members of the insurance profession in Manchester'. Essays on insurance matters were read regularly and can be found bound along with the annual reports. The education function continues with the institute's professional examinations.
