The foundation stone of the 'New Manchester Workhouse' was laid in 1855 to replace the New Bridge Street Workhouse. In 1915 the Manchester Workhouse was renamed the Crumpsall Institution, then in 1930 the Workhouses were dissolved by Government Act the Institute was renamed Park House Institution. Park House continued to provide long-term residential care for mental health patients. In 1948 with the formation of the National Health Service Park House was renamed Springfield Hospital and became part of the newly formed North Manchester Hospitals Group. During the 1970s Springfield was merged with Crumpsall Hospital and Delaunays Hospital to form North Manchester General.
