Letter concerns approach by the magistrates of Manchester concerning possible renumeration to be paid to [W.R] Hay [Chairman of Quarter Session] and the question of a permanent police estabklishment following the late diturbances. Gives Lord S[idmouth's] reactions.
N.B. Leader 45 George 11 c.59 (1805) J.Ps. within the hundred of Salford were empowered to raise a sum of money to pay a salary to the chairman of Quarter Sessions. (These powers were not in fact used and no payment was made though the Home Office thought otherwise).
This letter is in the outgoing letter book of the Home Office at the National Archives, reference HO 79/2/75-77 26 June 1812.
