1. Autobiography and diary of Charles Daniels. Starts with copy, 1926, of a letter from Thomas Norton describing the capsizing of the 'Emma' flat on launching at the boat building yard of the New Quay Company, Feb 1828, with the loss of 34 lives. Continues with dates of landmarks in shipping and canal history in Manchester, 1740-1880. Describes events of his working life from Mar 1879, when he started as an advice lad at Castlefield; in Jan 1881 moving to Water Street, where his uncle, James Daniels, was in charge of the warehouses and wharves. In Jun 1918 Daniels become chief traffic foreman over Water Street, Castlefield and the barges. Describes the opening of the Ship Canal, 1 Jan 1894. Refers to the employment of women as crane drivers, 1917-1919. Died 5 Nov 1932.
