Custodial history:
Abel Buckley Wimpenny was the manager of Hayfield Printing Company Wood Print Works (est 1858) from at least 1865; he retired in May 1905. The firm had an office at 52 Moseley Street. The works later became part of the Calico Printers Association. Wimpenny lived at Oak Villa, Hayfield, until at least 1895. Land and property connected with the print works was conveyed to him in trust in 1878 by Nathaniel Buckley of Alderdale Lodge, Droylsden, cotton spinner, and his brother Abel Buckley, J. P., of Ryecroft Hall, Ashton-under-Lyne. Abel B. Wimpenny, the author of the specimens, was probably the son of a sister of Abel Buckley.
