From 1856 it was known as W and J Galloway and Sons, becoming a limited company, Galloways Ltd., in 1889. Patents for the 'Galloway' boiler were taken out from 1848. In 1872 the firm established a large boiler works in Ardwick, Manchester. The firm's overseas business in the 1850s and 1860s included the supply of gunpowder mills and steam engines to the Sultan of Turkey's state powder mills in Constantinople, steam engines and gearings for Russian cotton mills in the St Petersburg area, and machinery for cotton mills in the Bombay area in India. The firm also undertook civil engineering projects. They built the viaduct over the Leven estuary for the Ulverston and Lancaster Railway in 1855-1857 and constructed Southport Pier in 1859-1860.
