St. Anne's, Lydgate, Saddleworth, was a chapelry in the parish of Rochdale, until 1844 when it was assigned Quickmere as its district by Order in Council, 23 May 1844 (London Gazette, 30 Nov. 1844) Archdeacon John Rushton's Visitation Returns for Lydgate church and schools, 10 July 1845, also include notes on the clergy and church property, and a letter from Rev. George Cowell to the Bishop of Manchester, 17 Sept. 1851, asking for help to repair damage to the church caused by lightening (MS f 942.72 R121 v. 62).
