On 17 July 1862, the foundation stone was laid, of a church to be erected at Denshaw, Saddleworth, in the county of York and parish of Rochdale, at the expense of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gartside of Ashton under Lyne.
Christ Church was consecrated on 24 September 1863.
A District was assigned, from the parish of St. Thomas, Friarmere, by Order in Council, 10 June 1864, (London Gazette 14 June 1864).
The parish boundaries were altered by Pastoral Order, 5 October 1973, (London Gazette. 18 October 1973).
