Custodial history:
A Sunday school was opened in Roughtown in 1866. Initially a branch of the Mossley school in Wyre Street, the Roughtown school flourished in its own right and became an independent society in 1895. The chapel building was acquired in 1899. Roughtown belonged to Mossley MNC Circuit until 1951 when transferred to Oldham (East) Methodist Circuit, then on to Ashton-under-Lyne Methodist Circuit in 1962. It closed in December 1968 and the premises were sold in 1969.
