Opened with accommodation for 862 pupils 16 May 1890. Infants from Holy Trinity School which closed the same day were transferred to the new building along with girls from St. Mark's (formerly National) School. Boys and staff from St. Mark's, and girls and staff from St Michael's (formerly National) School, Cooke Street, Hulme were transferred to the Duke Street buildings 15 August 1910. On the same day pupils and staff of the old Duke Street School were transferred to the new City Road School [M66/18]. Boys and girls were amalgamated to form a Mixed Department 22 August 1927. From 27 September 1935 the school operated as a single Mixed and Infants Department becoming a Junior Mixed and Infant School from 24 August 1936. Senior Pupils were transferred to City Road and Cavendish Schools [M66/15]. The school evacuated to Oldfield Brow Council School, Altrincham 1 September 1939 but re-opened 8 April 1940. In 1957 it was renamed Gaythorn County Primary. The school and closed 22 December 1966 and the premises were taken over by John Dalton College as a teacher training department.
