Culcheth Methodist Church (ex-MNC), Droylsden Road, Newton Heath

1819-1986
Archives
The first school-chapel in Culcheth, Newton Heath, was established in 1813 and was originally Wesleyan Methodist. From 1817 the Manchester Circuit refused to send preachers, so in 1827 the Culcheth members decided to join the Methodist New Connexion. A new school was opened in 1830 in Culcheth Lane and a new chapel was built in Droylsden Road in 1857 and enlarged in 1877. The school moved to new premises behind the chapel in 1867. The church belonged to Manchester (North) MNC Circuit and, after the Methodist Union of 1907, the successor Manchester (North) United Methodist Circuit. In 1936 it headed the Manchester (Culcheth) Methodist Circuit, then transferred to Manchester (Newton Heath) Methodist Circuit in 1958, Manchester (North East) Methodist Circuit in 1966 and Manchester (North) and Middleton) Circuit in 1970. In 2002 Culcheth joined the new Manchester Circuit, which was an amalgamation of four circuits. The old church building had closed in 1971and the members moved to a new building also in Droylsden Road. However in 2005 that building was closed and the members now use Hope Methodist Church in Failsworth for worship.
