Harpurhey Methodist Church (ex-Wesleyan Methodist)

1851-1992
Archives
The Harpurhey Wesleyan Methodist society was formed in 1821 in a school-chapel in Green Mount Street (re-named Sharston Street). In 1849 a new chapel was opened in Rochdale Road, on the corner of Green Mount Street, and the old building continued to be used as a Sunday school. A new school building was opened in 1877 on a site, at the corner of Rochdale Road and Beech Mount, which was large enough to accommodate the construction of a new church, opened in 1884. In time larger school premises were needed and a new school building was subsequently opened on Beech Mount in 1892.
Originally a member of the Manchester 1st Wesleyan Methodist (Oldham Street) Circuit, Harpurhey chapel joined the new Manchester (Victoria) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit in 1878. From 1936 it was head of Manchester (Harpurhey) Methodist Circuit; in 1966 it joined Manchester (North East) Methodist Circuit and in 1970 it joined Manchester (North) and Middleton Methodist Circuit. In 1966, owing to problems of maintaining the church building in the face of declining members and dry rot, the decision was made to demolish the church and to modernise and extend the school building so that it could be used as a church. In 1974 this building was badly damaged by fire and plans were made for the members to unite with the St Stephen's Anglicans and the Queen's Park Baptists in a new church on the site of the former St Stephen's church. Harpurhey United Church was duly opened in 1980. In 2002 Harpurhey Methodist joined the new Manchester Circuit, an amalgamation of four former circuits
