The Primitive Methodist society in Middleton was already established by 1840 and initially had premises in Irk Street. The Morton Street church was opened in 1881. The society belonged to the Manchester 1st Primitive Methodist Circuit, but left in 1872 to head its own circuit, the Middleton Primitive Methodist Circuit, and remained there until its closure in 1961.
