The society was originally Primitive Methodist. The church was opened in 1861 and it belonged to Manchester 1st Primitive Methodist Circuit before joining the newly created Middleton Primitive Methodist Circuit in 1872. In 1953 the society was joined by members from the former Wesleyan Methodist church in Manchester Old Road, Rhodes. The Chapel Street church was demolished in 1968 owing to dry rot, but the members continued their Methodist worship in All Saints, the local Anglican church. The society joined the Manchester (North) and Middleton Circuit in 1970, but was finally dissolved in around 1987.
