The Bowlee society was founded in 1863 as a mission of the Rhodes Primitive Methodists. The church was built in 1864 and it belonged to Manchester 1st Primitive Methodist Circuit before joining the newly created Middleton Primitive Methodist Circuit in 1872. A day school was opened in 1876. Bowlee Methodist Church closed in 1967.
