Middleton Junction Wesleyan Methodist Church

1874-1972
Archives
A Sunday school, known as the Hillock School, was opened at Lane End (the junction of Foxdenton and Grimshaw Lanes) in 1820. With the arrival of the Manchester to Leeds Railway and the building of Middleton Junction, the Lane End area changed considerably. Larger premises were needed and a site for a new school and church was purchased in 1871. The Sunday school was opened in 1873 and the day school in 1874, but it was not until 1891 that the church was opened. The Lane End, later Middleton Junction, society belonged to Oldham Wesleyan Methodist Circuit and the successor Oldham (Manchester Street) Circuit until 1950 when it transferred to Middleton Circuit. The church closed in 1970, the last services being held on 26 April, but the society continued to meet and hold services at St Gabriel's Anglican church in Middleton Junction.
