The original church was built in 1804 by Rev. Edward Smyth. On his death in 1823 it was offered for sale, but not purchased until 1845 when Rev. John Heron Macguire bought it. It was again sold in 1857, this time to Robert Gardner of Chaseley, Pendleton, merchant. It was consecrated in 1858, and a District assigned to it from All Saints, Chorlton upon Medlock, by Order in Council, 29 November 1859 (London Gazette, 2 December). The church was pulled down in 1863 and a new one built by Robert Gardner in memory of his wife. This was consecrated on 1 July 1865. In 1962 the parish of St. Luke was united with that of St. Paul, Chorlton upon Medlock, as St. Paul with St. Luke, and St. Luke's church was demolished.
The combined parish was joined by St. Saviour's, Chorlton upon Medlock, by Order in Council, 23 June 1971, (London Gazette, 25 June 1971) and renamed Christ Church, Brunswick.
On 8 June 1974 the new church of Christ Church, Brunswick was opened.
