Level of description:
Custodial history:
The first Wesleyan chapel in Blackley was opened in 1806 and moved to new, larger premises in Exchange Street in 1862. Schooling was an important part of Blackley Methodism: a separate Sunday school adjacent to the church opened in 1816, moved to new premises in Thomas Street in 1865 and moved again in 1881 to a new joint day and Sunday school building (the day school having been established in 1850). The school was taken over by the Manchester School Board in 1901. Initially part of Manchester 1st Wesleyan (Oldham Street) Circuit, the church joined Manchester 7th Wesleyan (Cheetham Hill) Circuit in 1863 and continued in the successor Manchester (Cheetham Hill) Methodist Circuit after the Methodist Union of 1932. Exchange Street closed in 1953.
