Methodist cottage meetings in Higher Blackley date from 1787. In 1819 the society acquired its own building to be used as a chapel and a school. The chapel in Crab Lane was opened in 1838 and re-built in 1864. Zion belonged to Manchester (North) Methodist New Connexion Circuit and the successor Manchester (North) United Methodist Circuit. It joined Manchester (Cheetham Hill) Wesley Circuit in 1936, then the amalgamated Manchester (Cheetham Hill and Prestwich) Methodist Circuit in 1961.
