Services started in St. Matthew's School, Grey St. on 1 January 1865. The foundation stone of the church was laid on 22 September 1866 and it was consecrated on 15 August 1868. Designed by J.M. Taylor. Its District was formed by Order in Council, 13 May 1869, (London Gazet, 14 May) from St. Thomas's, Ardwick and St. Stephen's, Chorlton upon Medlock.
Part of the parish was assigned to St. Clement's Longsight, by Order in Council, 21 July 1876, (London Gazette, 25 July 1876).
Part was assigned to St. Benedict's, Ardwick, by Order in Council, 28 June 1880 (London Gazette, 9 July).
It was united with St. Clement's, Longsight, by Order in Council, 8 May 1968, (London Gazette, 14 May), St. Matthew's church becoming the parish church of the new parish of St. Matthew's with St. Clement's, Longsight.
In 1971 the united parish joined St. Stephen's, Chorlton upon Medlock to form the parish of St. Luke the Physician, Longsight. Demolished 1975.
