The Market Inspectors worked under the direction of the Markets Committee and it was their job to ensure the markets ran smoothly and prosecuted those who contravened the Market Bye-laws. Some examples of prosecutions: plying for hire as a market porter without a licence, leaving of horses and carts standing longer than necessary for unloading thus blocking market thoroughfares, selling of inferior goods etc
