Following the formation of the NHS in 1948 Park House Institution became Springfield Hospital. Despite the change of name, the role of the hospital remained the same in continuing to provide long-term residental care for the mentally ill. It became part of North Manchester General Hospital in 1972 and closed in 1990-1992 when the government passed legislation shutting down the large 'asylums'.
