Ardwick was a separate township with its own overseers of' the poor and highways under the Manchester Church wardens until 1838, when it became part of the new Borough of Manchester. At about the same time, in 1839, the parish of St. Thomas, Ardwick was set up as a separate entity. Ardwick however retained its own overseers and the affairs of the township were managed by the Ardwick Committee of the Manchester Borough Council until 1875.
