Custodial history:
Gorton, in the parish of Manchester, was a separate township with its own overseers of the poor and highways under the Manchester churchwardens until 1837, when it became part of the Chorlton Union by the Order of the Poor Law Commissioners. The Gorton Local Board was set up in 1863 and in 1894, when the area of West Gorton was assimilated into the City of Manchester, the remaining area, Gorton, became an Urban District. Gorton was amalgamated with Manchester in 1909.
